We are very pleased to announce that Jake Kendrick – our PhD candidate – has been awarded the Turab Chakera Radiology Research Fellowship by the Royal Perth Hospital Imaging Research Fund for 3 years.
It is a PhD research grant for original radiology related research.

The title of Jakes PhD project is: “Automatic Segmentation of Metastatic Prostate lesions in Ga-PSMA PET/CT images using Convolutional Neural Networks“.
This achievement required an extensive application and review process which would have had Jake competing against graduates from multiple disciplines including medicine. His success is a credit to his hard work throughout his undergraduate studies and master of Medical Physics.
Jake’s project involves utilising positron emission tomography (PET) images obtained with the 68Ga-PSMA tracer to develop methods to predict future treatment outcomes for patients with advanced prostate cancer. Jake’s work would likely be used to tailor treatments to individual patients, reducing resource needs in the health system and reducing the burden to patients of ineffective treatments and their side-effects. It may also yield valuable insights into the way prostate cancer progresses, offering opportunities to develop new strategies to combat it.
Jake will be using computational approaches (image processing, neural networks) to relate image features to disease response. He will be supervised by Martin Ebert (SCGH), Pejman Rowshanfarzad (Physics), Ghulam Mubashar Hassan (Computer Science & Software Engineering) and Ros Francis (Medicine), though his work involves collaborators spanning Curtin University, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital, multiple interstate hospitals and the University of Wisconsin.
Once again we congratulate Jake and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
