During February 2019 the Medical Physics group received a visit from Prof. Renaud de Crevoisier and Prof. Oscar Acosta from the Laboratoire Traitement du Signal et de l’Image at the University of Rennes, France, joint supervisors of PhD student Eugenia Mylona who is spending four months with our group. Professors de Crevoisier and Acosta undertake research into using image processing and machine learning methods to refine our understanding of the causes of radiotherapy treatment toxicity, and to develop ways to reduce that toxicity. Our group is collaborating with the Rennes team to use retrospectively collected patient treatment data to derive imaging-based computational models of treatment-induced side effects. Such models will be used to plan the treatments of future patients and to develop new ways of delivering radiotherapy without side effects.
