Installed recently at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and in the past year at Curtin University, VERTTM is a virtual radiation therapy system. Simulating a machine used in radiotherapy treatments, the linear accelerator, VERT allows students to learn in a virtual, 2D or 3D setting before spending invaluable time on a real machine. Those studying medical physics and radiation therapy will have more opportunities for training, whilst optimising the availability of hospital facilities and practitioners’ time to treat patients. The VERT system is being used to train Western Australian radiotherapy students at Curtin University for the first time this year, and here at UWA we plan to incorporate VERT into our medical physics program.
